10 SUNNY-SIDE-UP DEPARTMENTAL INSIGHTS: QUALITY MANAGEMENT Quality management is often viewed as something abs- tract because often in practice the documentation of acti- vities dominates so that the work on the change processes is neglected. But what exactly is quality management? There are many definitions. With this quote from an Ama- zon manager, we would like to give you a better idea: “If your employees fail, then you really need to look for new pathways.” Look for new pathways; that is the mission! Today, quality management no longer means simply pre- cisely examining the end product, but also working more efficiently and intelligently. Thus, quality management is a regulatory element of a forward-looking company. QUALITY MANAGEMENT AT LOHMANN TIERZUCHT In the past, Cuxhaven was the only site of Lohmann Tier- zucht production, and so decades ago, a quality manage- ment systemwas introduced there to guarantee the quality of the products and particularly to meet the increasing de- mands concerning bio-safety. Work in the hatcheries, farms and feed mills was subjected to a comprehensive risk analy- sis, and certified in accordance with the valid international requirements for risk assessment design (HACCP) . The feed mill is also certified in accordance with GMP+ standard to meet the demands of the market and to further improve the process procedures in feed production. The demands on the quality management system have changed fundamentally in recent years, owing to the company’s international focus. Today, our production sites can be found all over the globe, and we supply our farm and hatchery customers located on different continents. To better overcome the challenges this presented, par- ticularly in production and logistics, Lohmann Tierzucht strives to expand the existing quality management system throughout the entire company, and wherever possible to develop or certify it in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001. We took a first step in this direction this year: In March 2019, our feed mill in Germany was certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 . This process will be continued and expanded to cover hatcheries, farms and even the whole organisational structure.
